This exercise is not only good for low back strength, but helps with the small, proprioceptive muscles in the spine. In order to have a stable core and stable low back, these small muscles need to be strengthened too. Balance exercises (like this) are good first steps to engage those proprioceptive muscles to make sure they aren't being missed.
